Description: This is a 4-day class covering the hardware and software aspects of the ColdFire family of microprocessors (MCF5xxx). The ColdFire series is a "variable length" RISC microprocessor with many similarities to the 68K family. This class consists of lecture, lab, and exercises.

The software portion of this course covers the programming model, addressing modes, and instruction set. Also, exception processing and program examples are also reviewed.

The hardware portion begins with the system integration module (SIM). The SIM includes the external bus interface and timing, chip select operation, DRAM controller, and system protection features. The hardware portion also covers the on-board debug module.

This course also covers the other ColdFire family resources, including on-chip caches, timers, UARTs and the M-bus interface.

Objectives:
  • Write programs for the ColdFire CPU
  • Write programs to initialize the internal I/O modules
  • Design interface between the ColdFire and memory as well as I/O devices
  • Write I/O service routines for internal/external peripherals
Prerequisites: Knowledge or design experience of 32, 16, or 8-bit microprocessors/microcontrollers is required.
